Why an Urbania for this route

Palani is a short, flat, easy drive and a demanding destination, which is an unusual combination among our routes. Two and a half hours on level road, and then a hill shrine reached by winch or on foot with a queue that grows through the morning. The driving is the simple part and we plan the day around the climb rather than the distance.

Most groups pair it with Isha and the Velliangiri foothills on the western side of Coimbatore, which is the sensible way to fill the day but does mean crossing the city between them. That is a full day rather than the half-day the individual distances suggest, and it works far better with an early start than a leisurely one.

Thaipusam in January or February is the thing to check before fixing dates. The festival brings very large crowds and substantial numbers of pilgrims walking the roads, which changes the driving, the parking and the queue at the top. It is remarkable to witness and it is not the day to arrive unprepared.

Which Urbania should you choose?

Any of the three manages the roads, which are flat and wide throughout. The 13 seater is our default because Palani town parking is some distance from the hill base and congested on busy days, and the shorter vehicle places more easily.

Luggage is irrelevant on a day trip. If Palani is one stop on a longer temple circuit through Madurai or the delta, size for that trip rather than this leg.

Suggested itinerary

  1. PollachiOn the road east, with room for a long vehicle and a good place to break.
  2. UdumalaipettaiLast town before Palani. Wind farms across the plain from here.
  3. PalaniThe hill shrine, reached by winch or on foot. Everything else is in the town below.

Itineraries are indicative. Actual routing, timings and stops are subject to road, weather, traffic and permit conditions, and to the chauffeur's judgement on ghat sections.

Road notes

Flat, short and easy throughout with no ghat driving on the route itself. The climbing is at the destination rather than on the way, which is unusual for a hill shrine and makes this one of the easier pilgrimage drives we run.

Season

October to February is comfortable. The Thaipusam festival in January or February brings very large crowds and pilgrims walking the roads in numbers, which changes both the driving and the parking. March to June is hot and the climb is hard work in it.

Getting around at Palani

The vehicle waits in the designated parking while you go up. The winch is the practical option for most groups and there is also a stepped path for those who want to walk it. Neither is quick on a busy day, and the waiting is part of what you are hiring.

Isha sits on the other side of Coimbatore entirely, which is why pairing the two makes a full day. If the group's interest is the Velliangiri foothills and the setting rather than the centre itself, say so — it changes where we drop and how long we allow.

Worth seeing

  • Palani hill shrine
  • Isha Yoga Centre near Coimbatore
  • Velliangiri foothills
  • Thirumoorthy hills and dam
  • Wind farms across the Udumalai plain

Parking

Palani town parking is some distance from the hill base and fills heavily on festival days. The chauffeur uses the designated area and waits there.

Questions about this route

How long is the drive from Coimbatore to Palani?

Two and a half to three hours for 110 km on flat, easy road. There is no ghat driving on the route — the climbing is all at the destination, which is unusual for a hill shrine.

How do we get up the hill?

By winch, which is what most groups use, or on foot up a stepped path. Neither is quick on a busy day. The vehicle waits in the designated parking below while you go, and that waiting is part of what you are hiring.

What time should we leave?

Before six in the morning. The queue at the top grows through the morning and the climb is considerably more pleasant before the heat builds. Leaving at nine turns a comfortable day into a long one.

Can we combine Palani with Isha?

Yes, and most groups do. It does mean crossing Coimbatore between them, so it is a full day rather than the half-day the distances suggest. An early start makes it comfortable; a late one makes it a rush.

What happens during Thaipusam?

Very large crowds and substantial numbers of pilgrims walking the roads, which changes the driving, the parking and the queue. It is remarkable to be part of and not a day to arrive into unprepared. Check the dates before fixing yours.

Do we need a permit?

No. The route stays within Tamil Nadu throughout, so no interstate permit applies. Tolls are minimal and charged at actuals against receipts.

How close can the vehicle get?

To the designated parking, which is some distance from the hill base and fills heavily on festival days. Expect a walk from there, longer on busy days.

Which seater should we take?

Any of the three for the road. We default to the 13 seater because Palani's parking is congested on busy days and the shorter vehicle places more easily.

Can we do it as a day trip?

Comfortably, and most groups should. Two and a half hours each way with a morning at the shrine leaves plenty of day. Adding Isha makes it a full one but still a single day.

Is it suitable for older family members?

The drive is one of the easiest we run. The hill is the question — the winch makes it manageable for most people, but the walk from parking and the queue are real. Tell us at booking and we will plan the drop accordingly.

What is the best time of year?

October to February. March to June is hot and the climb is hard work in it, whether by winch or on foot, because the waiting is in the open.

Can we add Thirumoorthy or Topslip?

Thirumoorthy hills and dam sit near the route and add an hour or two. Topslip is further and better as its own trip. Tell us what interests you and we will say honestly which fits the day.
