About Yercaud
Yercaud sits at around 1,400 metres in the Shevaroy hills above Salem, and it is the hill station Tamil Nadu forgot. It has coffee, orange groves, a lake and a handful of viewpoints, and that is genuinely the extent of it.
The appeal is precisely that. In May, when Ooty and Kodaikanal are full and their approach roads are slow with day traffic, Yercaud is quiet and the ghat has around twenty bends rather than thirty-six. For a group that wants somewhere cool to sit rather than a list of things to see, it is the better answer and almost nobody books it.
Groups wanting a full itinerary will find it thin, and we would rather say that plainly than have someone arrive expecting Ooty. The correct expectation is a lake, a few viewpoints, some walking and a great deal of quiet.
Staying there
Accommodation is limited and mostly modest, clustered near the lake with a few estate properties further out. It fills at weekends in season and is otherwise easy.
There is very little in the way of restaurants beyond the lake area, so properties that include meals are worth preferring.

Is there much to do at Yercaud?
Honestly, not much — a lake, a few viewpoints, coffee and orange groves and some short walks. Groups wanting a full itinerary will find it thin. Groups wanting somewhere cool and quiet to sit will find it exactly right.
How does it compare with Ooty and Kodaikanal?
Smaller, quieter and far easier to reach — around twenty bends on the ghat against thirty-six for Ooty. In May, when the bigger hill stations are full and their roads slow, Yercaud is calm. That is its whole case.
How long should we stay?
Two nights. There is not enough here to fill more unless walking and sitting is genuinely the point, in which case three is pleasant.
Is Kiliyur Falls worth seeing?
In the monsoon months, yes. Outside them it can be a trickle, and a group arriving in March expecting a waterfall should adjust expectations. It also involves a steep set of steps down.
Do we need a permit?
No. Yercaud is in Tamil Nadu and the usual approach from Chennai crosses no state line. Tolls on the Salem highway are charged at actuals.
Is it crowded in summer?
Far less than Ooty or Kodaikanal, which is much of the appeal. April to June is warm at Yercaud but the town stays manageable when the bigger hill stations are unbearable.
How is the ghat road?
Around twenty bends, well surfaced and the gentlest hill climb we run. It is a good first hill road for a group with anyone prone to travel sickness.
Where do we eat?
Mostly at your property. There is very little beyond the lake area, so places that include meals are worth preferring over those that do not.
What about Yelagiri instead?
Closer still to Chennai and smaller again. If Yercaud sounds thin, Yelagiri is thinner. It suits a single night somewhere quiet rather than a proper hill weekend.
When is the best time to visit?
October to March is most pleasant. The monsoon is green and quiet with occasional slippery going on the ghat. Summer is warm but bearable, which is the point of the place.
