No interstate permit. Both Coimbatore and Ooty are in Tamil Nadu, so the route never crosses a state line. Tolls on the Mettupalayam road are charged at actuals against receipts kept by the chauffeur.

Before seven in the morning if you want the day. The climb is more pleasant before the day-trip traffic builds, and Ooty town is far easier to move around in before mid-morning. There is no forest gate or curfew on this route, so the timing is about comfort rather than access.

Coonoor is quieter, closer to the tea country most people actually came to see, and it removes the busiest final section of the climb from your daily movements. Ooty has more to do within walking distance. For a first visit with a mixed group, Coonoor is often the better base and rarely the one people ask for.

The road is maintained and stays open, but it runs in cloud for long stretches with visibility down to a few metres in places, and the descent is slower when wet. We add time rather than pressing on, and we check for landslip diversions before dispatch during those months.

Mettupalayam at the foot of the ghat is the sensible refuelling and comfort stop, as it is the last flat ground. There are viewpoints on the climb, but stopping space for a seven-metre vehicle is genuinely limited, so our chauffeurs use the halts that can take it rather than improvising on a bend.

Many groups do — ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up from Mettupalayam or Coonoor and have the vehicle meet them at the top. Tell us if you plan this so the chauffeur is positioned at the right station at the right time. Train seats book out well in advance and are arranged by you, not by us.

It is quieter, greener and considerably harder driving — a tighter climb through a reserve where we would send the 13 seater rather than the 17. If your group wants tea country without crowds, ask us about Valparai. If they want a hill town with things to do, Ooty is the right answer.
