A Chola vimana above the Cauvery delta. The great temples of Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram were built within a century of each other a thousand years ago, and they sit close enough together to make the delta the densest stretch of this circuit.

Why this circuit
This is the circuit the south is known for, and the reason it works as one trip rather than five is that the great temples of Tamil Nadu sit in a rough arc — Kanchipuram in the north, the Cauvery delta in the middle, Madurai and Rameswaram in the south — with reasonable roads between them and nothing that requires a difficult climb. Nine days covers it at a pace that leaves time inside the temples rather than only on the road between them.
The single biggest mistake groups make is compressing it. Six days is possible and produces a trip that is almost entirely driving, with arrivals at midday when the temples have closed and departures before the evening puja. The delta in particular rewards slowing down: Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram are close enough together that a rushed day sees the outside of four temples and the inside of none.
Having one vehicle and one chauffeur for the whole nine days is what makes the daily rhythm workable. Temple timings dictate everything — most close for several hours around midday and reopen in the late afternoon — so the day is built as a morning temple, a long drive through the closed hours, and an evening temple. By the third day the chauffeur knows the group, the luggage and how long you actually take, which is worth more on a circuit than on any single trip.
Which Urbania
The 13 seater is our standard recommendation for this circuit. The roads throughout are flat and wide with no ghat driving at all, so the 17 presents no difficulty in transit — but nearly every stop is a temple town, where the streets are narrow, crowded and effectively one-way regardless of the signage, and the shorter vehicle gets consistently closer to the entrances.
Over nine days that difference compounds. A group walking three hundred metres further at every one of twenty temples notices it by day five, particularly if anyone is older or the weather is hot. If your group is twelve or under, take the 13 seater even though the 17 would technically seat you.
Day by day
- Day 1 Chennai to Kanchipuram to Tiruvannamalai 260 km
An early start for the Kanchipuram temples before the midday closing, then south to Tiruvannamalai for the evening. Arunachala is visible long before you reach it.
- Day 2 Tiruvannamalai to Chidambaram 170 km
Morning at the Arunachaleswarar temple in the cool, then east to the coast. Chidambaram's Nataraja temple has its own rhythm of pujas worth timing for.
- Day 3 Chidambaram to Kumbakonam 75 km
A short day, deliberately. The Cauvery delta is dense with temples and this is where the circuit slows down rather than speeds up.
- Day 4 Kumbakonam and the Navagraha temples 140 km
A full day circling the nine Navagraha shrines. They are spread across the delta and the day is long, but done in one loop rather than piecemeal.
- Day 5 Kumbakonam to Thanjavur to Trichy 110 km
The Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur deserves most of a morning. Srirangam at Trichy is the largest functioning temple complex in the world and needs the afternoon.
- Day 6 Trichy to Madurai 135 km
A shorter drive with the Rockfort in the morning. Madurai's Meenakshi temple is at its best in the evening, which is what this timing is for.
- Day 7 Madurai to Rameswaram 170 km
Across the Pamban crossing to the island. The temple and its corridors in the afternoon, Dhanushkodi at the tip if the light holds.
- Day 8 Rameswaram to Kanyakumari 300 km
The long leg south along the coast, arriving in time for sunset at the tip. This is the day the circuit covers the most ground.
- Day 9 Kanyakumari to Madurai or Chennai 250 km
Sunrise over the water, then north. Ending at Madurai makes for a comfortable day; continuing to Chennai is a long one.

Luggage is a real consideration on a circuit of this length in a way it is not on a two-night trip. Nine days means everyone has a full case, and a 13 seater at twelve passengers with twelve cases is at its limit rather than comfortable. Tell us the bag count with the headcount and we will size it honestly, including telling you when the 17 seater is the better answer despite the temple streets.
Dress and footwear matter more here than on any other circuit we run. Most of these temples require bare feet on stone that is genuinely hot by midday, and several have dress requirements that are enforced. Groups routinely underestimate how much walking nine days of temple visits involves — if anyone has difficulty walking, tell us at booking, because it changes which temples we would recommend and where we can drop.
We cannot arrange darshan tickets or special queue access anywhere on this circuit. Those go through each temple's own administration, and anyone offering to arrange them on your behalf is worth treating with caution. Tell us what you have booked and we will build the timing around it.

Questions about this circuit
How many days does the temple trail actually need?
Nine is right. Seven is possible and tight. Six turns it into a driving holiday with temple stops, which is not what anyone books it for. The delta section is where the time is genuinely needed — Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Trichy each deserve most of a day.
Can we start from Madurai instead of Chennai?
Yes, and for groups flying into Madurai it makes a better circuit — you run it in reverse and finish at Chennai, or loop back. The order changes but the content does not. Tell us where you are starting and ending when you enquire.
Do we need any permits?
No. The circuit stays within Tamil Nadu throughout, so there is no interstate permit. Tolls and parking are charged at actuals against receipts kept by the chauffeur.
Can you arrange darshan tickets?
No. Darshan arrangements go through each temple's own administration and we cannot book them on your behalf. Tell us what you have arranged and we will build the day's timing around it — that part we can do well.
Why are the driving days so uneven?
Because the temples are unevenly spread. Day three is 75 km and day eight is 300 km, and that is deliberate rather than poor planning — the delta needs short days and the run south to Kanyakumari has nothing worth stopping for in the middle.
How much walking is involved?
A great deal, most of it barefoot on stone. Srirangam alone is the largest functioning temple complex in the world. Over nine days this is the thing that most affects how the trip feels, and it is the reason to tell us in advance if anyone in the group has difficulty walking.
What is included in the price?
The vehicle and chauffeur for the full circuit, fuel, and driver batta for each day. Tolls and parking are charged at actuals with receipts. Accommodation, meals, temple entry and guide fees are not included — we are the transport, not a tour operator.
Do you book the hotels?
No, and we would rather be straight about that than pretend otherwise. You book accommodation to your own budget and taste, and tell us where you are staying so the chauffeur can plan the approaches. Several of these towns have properties a long vehicle cannot reach, which is worth checking with us before you commit.
Which seater should we take?
The 13 seater unless you are more than twelve. The roads are flat throughout so the 17 drives easily, but almost every stop is a temple town with narrow streets, and over twenty temples the extra walking from where a long vehicle can park adds up considerably.
What is the best time of year?
October to March. The delta is genuinely hot from March to June, and barefoot on stone at midday in April is hard work for anyone. The northeast monsoon brings rain in November and December but rarely disrupts the driving.
Can we shorten it to just the delta temples?
Yes, and it makes a good four- or five-day circuit from Chennai — Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, the Navagraha temples, Thanjavur and Trichy. It is the densest and arguably the finest part of the full trail. Ask us and we will lay it out.
Is the driver's rest planned into it?
Yes, and it has to be on a nine-day circuit. Days three and six are deliberately short, and we would rather propose a second chauffeur than run one person for nine consecutive long days. If your itinerary compresses to the point where that is unavoidable, we will say so before you book.
