About Nagarahole
Nagarahole takes its name from the Kannada for snake river, after the winding stream through it. The Kabini reservoir along its southern edge was created in the 1970s, and the open shoreline it left is the reason this side of the reserve has the reputation it does — animals come to open water, and open water is where they can be seen.
That reputation is specifically for elephants in the dry months, when herds gather at the receding water in numbers seen almost nowhere else in India. It is also known for black panther sightings, which are genuinely rare and which no operator can promise, whatever they suggest.
The reserve has two quite separate sides. Veeranahosahalli to the north is the quieter, less developed entrance; Kabini to the south is where the well-known resorts are. They are a long way apart by road, so which one you book determines the shape of the trip.
Staying there
The Kabini side has most of the established resorts, some of them well outside the ordinary run of Indian wildlife accommodation. Approaches range from surfaced drives to rough estate tracks.
Staying on the fringe the night before is not optional if a dawn safari is the point, because the reserve roads close to through traffic overnight.

Questions about Nagarahole
Why is Kabini so well known?
The reservoir created in the 1970s left an open shoreline, and animals come to open water. In the dry months elephant herds gather there in numbers seen almost nowhere else in India, which is what built the reputation.
Will we see a black panther?
Almost certainly not, and nobody can promise otherwise. Nagarahole is one of the few places where they are seen at all, which is different from being seen often. An operator guaranteeing one is selling something.
Which side should we stay on?
Kabini to the south has the established resorts and the reputation; Veeranahosahalli to the north is quieter and less developed. They are a long way apart by road, so the choice shapes the whole trip.
Can we drive from Mysore for a dawn safari?
No. The reserve roads close overnight, so a first-light safari means being on the fringe the night before. It is the most common planning mistake here and at Bandipur.
Can our vehicle go on the safari?
No. Safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles from the safari centre and private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Your vehicle waits at the centre.
When are sightings best?
March to May, when it is hot and animals concentrate at the reservoir. October to February is far more comfortable to travel in. The monsoon is green, quiet and has fewer visitors.
How does it compare with Bandipur?
Kabini has the stronger reputation for sightings and is quieter. Bandipur is easier to reach and pairs more naturally with an onward trip to Ooty. For wildlife alone most people would choose Kabini.
Do we need a permit?
Not an interstate one — the reserve is in Karnataka. Continuing south into Wayanad crosses into Kerala and does require one, which we arrange before dispatch.
Can we combine it with Coorg?
Yes, and from Mysuru it makes one of the best four-night circuits in the south. Iruppu Falls sits between the two, so the transfer becomes part of the trip rather than a drive.
Is there anything to do besides safaris?
Birdwatching along the backwaters is exceptional and needs no permit or slot, and coracle rides are available on the Kabini. Beyond that, not a great deal, which is rather the point.
