Tea estate slopes and silver oaks in the Nilgiris

Tea and silver oaks near Kotagiri, the quietest of the three Nilgiri towns. The loop crosses three states and two tiger reserves in under 800 km, which is why its timing is governed by forest gates rather than by distance.

Distances and timings are indicative planning figures, not the basis of a quote. Itineraries are indicative — actual routing, timings and stops are subject to road, weather, traffic and permit conditions, and to the chauffeur's judgement.

Why this circuit

This is the most tightly constrained circuit we run, and also the most rewarding per kilometre. In under 800 km it crosses three states, two tiger reserves and two hill plateaus, and it is one of very few trips in the south where the landscape changes completely three times in six days.

Almost none of the planning is about distance. Days one, five and six run through reserve forest that closes to through traffic overnight, so those departures are set by a gate rather than by how far you are going. Day five in particular has to land you on the Kabini fringe before the road shuts, and day six is built around a dawn safari that cannot be reached by setting out that morning. The middle days are flexible; those are not.

The three-state crossing is the other thing to understand. Tamil Nadu and Kerala both require interstate commercial permits, which we obtain before dispatch rather than negotiate at a border post. Two permits on one circuit is unusual and it is not optional — a quote that mentions neither is quoting for something else.

Which Urbania

The 13 seater, firmly. This circuit includes the climb to Ooty, the descent to Gudalur, plateau roads in Wayanad and reserve approaches at Kabini, and the shorter vehicle is better on every one of them. Ooty town parking is limited and Wayanad resort approaches are frequently narrow.

Above twelve passengers we will send the 17 and it will manage, but this is a circuit where we would genuinely raise the option of two smaller vehicles for a large group. The gain in access across six days of hill and forest roads is real rather than theoretical.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 Mysore to Ooty 160 km

South through Bandipur and Mudumalai, crossing into Tamil Nadu, then the climb to Ooty. The forest gate governs the departure time, not the distance.

  2. Day 2 Ooty and Coonoor 70 km

Doddabetta and the lake in the morning, Coonoor and the tea estates in the afternoon. The toy train between the two if you have booked it.

  3. Day 3 Ooty to Wayanad 120 km

Down through Gudalur and across into Kerala. A short day on paper and a slow one in practice, with the descent and a second state crossing.

  4. Day 4 Wayanad 90 km

Edakkal caves and Soochipara, or Chembra if you hold a permit. The plateau is spread out and the vehicle works all day.

  5. Day 5 Wayanad to Nagarahole 110 km

North back into Karnataka and to the Kabini side, timed to arrive before the reserve road closes. Afternoon safari if the slot allows.

  6. Day 6 Nagarahole to Mysore or Coimbatore 210 km

Dawn safari, then out. Mysuru is a short morning; Coimbatore is a full day back through the reserves.

The forest closures decide this circuit and they are worth stating plainly. Reserve roads shut to through traffic overnight, and arriving late at a gate does not mean a slow finish — it means stopping on the wrong side of it until morning, with your accommodation on the other. We plan days one and five with a comfortable margin and confirm the current timings before dispatch, since they are set by the forest departments and do change.

Three things need booking by you before you travel: safari slots at Nagarahole, a Chembra Peak permit if you want the climb, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway seats if you want the train. All three have caps or fixed slots, all three fill, and none can be produced on the morning. Tell us what you hold and we will build the days around them.

This circuit is not the one for a group in a hurry or with limited mobility. There is a great deal of getting in and out, several walks on uneven ground, and two early starts driven by safari times. It is at its best for a group that wants variety and will accept being told when to leave — which, on a route governed by gates, is the whole game.

Questions about this circuit

Why is this circuit so timing-sensitive?

Because three of its six days run through reserve forest that closes to through traffic overnight. Those departures are set by a gate, not by distance. Arriving late means waiting until morning on the wrong side of it, with your hotel on the other.

How many permits does it need?

Two — Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The loop crosses three states, which is unusual for a circuit this short. We obtain both before dispatch and they appear at actuals with the receipts. A quote mentioning neither is quoting for a different journey.

Can we drive from Mysore for the last-day safari?

No. The reserve roads close overnight, so a dawn safari means being on the Kabini fringe the night before. Day five exists precisely to put you there, and it is why the circuit is six days rather than five.

What do we need to book ourselves?

Nagarahole safari slots, a Chembra Peak permit if you want the climb, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway seats if you want the train. All have caps or fixed slots and all fill. Tell us what you hold and we will build the days around them.

Is day three really a short day?

On paper. It is 120 km and takes most of the morning, because it includes the descent from Ooty through Gudalur and a state crossing. Short distance and slow going is the pattern for this whole circuit.

Which seater should we take?

The 13 seater, firmly. This circuit has the Ooty climb, the Gudalur descent, Wayanad plateau roads and Kabini reserve approaches, and the shorter vehicle is better on all of them. Above twelve we would genuinely discuss two smaller vehicles rather than one 17.

Can we run it in the other direction?

Yes — starting from Coimbatore it runs Ooty first, then Wayanad, then Nagarahole, then out through the reserves. The gate timings apply either way. Tell us where you start and end and we will order it accordingly.

Is it suitable for older travellers?

Less so than most of our circuits. There is a great deal of getting in and out, walks on uneven ground at Edakkal and the falls, and two early starts driven by safari times. It rewards a group that wants variety and will accept being told when to leave.

When should we not do this circuit?

During the monsoon. The whole loop sits in cloud, the ghat descents run wet for weeks, and Chembra and the waterfalls close. October to March is the answer.

Will we see wildlife?

You will pass through two tiger reserves and see something from the road more often than not, and the Kabini safari has a good reputation. Nothing is guaranteed. Anyone promising you a tiger is selling something.

Can we shorten it to five days?

Only by dropping either Wayanad or the safari, and both are reasons people book it. If five days is your limit we would rather propose the Western Ghats circuit or a straight Nilgiris trip than compress this one into something that does neither well.

What is included?

The vehicle and chauffeur for six days, fuel, driver batta each day, and both interstate permits with their state entry taxes at actuals. Safari tickets, Chembra permits, train seats, accommodation, meals and entry fees are not included.
