About Chikmagalur
Coffee growing in India began here. The story is that a pilgrim named Baba Budan brought seven beans back from Yemen in the seventeenth century and planted them on the hills that now carry his name, and every coffee estate in the south descends from that.
It is the quieter alternative to Coorg and noticeably less developed — fewer resorts, fewer places to eat, and considerably fewer people. What it has instead is altitude: Mullayanagiri at 1,930 metres is the highest point in Karnataka, and the views from the Baba Budan ridge are better than anything Coorg offers.
The catch is that the best of it sits above where a road vehicle stops. The final approaches to Mullayanagiri's summit and to Hebbe Falls are rough tracks that estate jeeps handle. That is normal for the region rather than a shortcoming, but it does mean planning the vehicle to reach the estate and the jeeps to finish the climb.
Staying there
Estate homestays are what Chikmagalur does best and they are scattered widely on plantation lanes that are frequently narrow, unsurfaced and steep. The property approach matters more here than the address.
Send us the property name when you book. The last few hundred metres are where a long vehicle meets its limit, and finding that out at dusk on a wet track is an avoidable problem.

How does Chikmagalur compare with Coorg?
Quieter, less developed and higher. Coorg has more to see and more places to eat; Chikmagalur has Mullayanagiri at 1,930 metres and considerably fewer people. For a first trip Coorg, for a second Chikmagalur.
Can we drive up to Mullayanagiri?
Not all the way in a group vehicle. The final stretch is rough track that local jeeps handle, which is normal for the region rather than a limitation of the Urbania. We get you to the base and the jeeps finish it. The same applies to Hebbe Falls.
Can a 17 seater reach our homestay?
It depends entirely on the property. Estate lanes here are narrow, often unsurfaced and sometimes steep. Send us the property name at booking and we will check the approach before you travel.

By tradition, because a pilgrim named Baba Budan brought seven coffee beans back from Yemen in the seventeenth century and planted them on these hills. Every coffee estate in South India descends from that planting.
How many days do we need?
Two nights minimum from Bengaluru, given a five to six hour drive at each end. Three lets you add Belur and Halebidu on the way back, which is worth doing.
When should we go?
October to February for clear views from the ridge. The monsoon is at its most beautiful and hardest on the estate tracks, with the upper routes sometimes impassable.
Do we need a permit?
No. Chikmagalur is in Karnataka, so approaches from Bengaluru or Mysuru cross no state line. Tolls on the Hassan highway are charged at actuals.
Is there much to do besides the estates?
Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Hebbe Falls and Kemmanagundi, all needing the vehicle and some needing jeeps. Beyond that it is walking and coffee, which is the point. Groups wanting a full itinerary should look at the Western Ghats circuit.
Can we add Belur and Halebidu?
Yes, and they sit near the Hassan turn-off. On the way out they lengthen day one considerably; on the way back they make the return a trip in itself. Tell us at booking and we will route accordingly.
Is it suitable for a group with older members?
The estates and the drives are fine. Mullayanagiri's summit and Hebbe Falls involve jeep transfers and rough walking, so those are the parts to plan around. Tell us and we will suggest what works.
