The falls at Courtallam, fed by the southwest monsoon rather than the northeast one that waters the rest of Tamil Nadu. That is why they run hardest between June and September, when the coast at the other end of this circuit is at its least pleasant.

Why this circuit
This circuit covers the bottom of India — the temple island at Rameswaram, the point where three seas meet at Kanyakumari, and the falls at Courtallam in the ghat foothills. Three quite different places within a five-day loop from Madurai, on flat roads with no serious climbing anywhere.
The season question here is genuinely awkward and worth stating rather than glossing. Courtallam's falls are fed by the southwest monsoon and run hardest between June and September. The coast at Rameswaram and Kanyakumari is at its most comfortable between October and February. There is no month that is ideal for both, and which you optimise for depends on why you are going.
Padmanabhapuram Palace is the piece most groups miss and the one we push hardest. It sits inland from Kanyakumari, it is arguably the finest wooden palace in India, and it is routinely skipped by groups who treat Kanyakumari as a sunrise and leave. It needs the vehicle and it needs half a day, and day three exists partly to make room for it.
Which Urbania
The 13 seater is the sensible default. The roads are flat and wide throughout so the 17 drives easily, but Rameswaram's temple streets are narrow and Kanyakumari's parking fills at exactly the hours you want to be there.
Five days across two climates means real luggage — you will pack for a hot exposed coast and a wet ghat foothill. Twelve passengers with twelve cases fills a 13 seater properly, so tell us the bag count rather than the headcount.
Day by day
- Day 1 Madurai to Rameswaram 170 km
Across the Pamban crossing. The temple in the afternoon and Dhanushkodi at the tip if the light holds.
- Day 2 Rameswaram to Kanyakumari 300 km
The long leg down the coast, arriving for sunset at the southern tip. The most driving of the circuit in one day.
- Day 3 Kanyakumari 80 km
Sunrise over the water, then Padmanabhapuram Palace inland — one of the finest wooden palaces in India and routinely missed.
- Day 4 Kanyakumari to Courtallam via Tirunelveli 180 km
North into the ghat foothills. The falls are the point, and how much water they carry depends entirely on the season.
- Day 5 Courtallam to Madurai 320 km
A last morning at the falls, then the run north. Straightforward flat road.

Day two is 300 km and the longest of the circuit. There is little worth stopping for between Rameswaram and Kanyakumari, so it is planned as an early start and a straight run to arrive for sunset. Groups who leave late arrive after dark and lose the reason for the day.
The ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari is suspended in rough seas, sometimes for days at a stretch, and that is the single thing most likely to disappoint a group who came specifically for it. We cannot book it or predict it. Build the day so that a cancelled ferry does not empty it.
Courtallam is a bathing place rather than a viewing place, and it is busiest in season when the falls are running. If your group intends to bathe, bring what you need for it — there are changing facilities but they are basic and crowded. If your group does not, be honest with us at booking, because out of season the falls may be little more than a trickle and we would suggest a different last two days.

Questions about this circuit
When is the best time for this circuit?
There is no single answer, which is the awkward truth of it. Courtallam's falls run hardest June to September on the southwest monsoon; the coast is most comfortable October to February. Tell us which matters more to you and we will say which months suit.
How hard is day two?
Three hundred kilometres from Rameswaram to Kanyakumari with little worth stopping for in between. It is planned as an early start and a straight run so you arrive for sunset. Leaving late means arriving after dark and losing the point of the day.
Is Padmanabhapuram Palace worth it?
It is the piece most groups miss and the one we push hardest. Arguably the finest wooden palace in India, inland from Kanyakumari, needing the vehicle and half a day. It also closes on certain days, so tell us at booking and we will plan around it.
Will the ferry to the rock memorial be running?

The 13 seater. The roads suit any of the three, but Rameswaram's temple streets are narrow and Kanyakumari's parking fills at sunrise and sunset. Watch the luggage — five days across two climates is more than a weekend's packing.
Can we do this in four days?
Only by dropping Courtallam or rushing Kanyakumari. If four days is your limit, we would rather propose Rameswaram and Kanyakumari alone as a tighter four-day loop than compress all three.
Can we start from Chennai?
You can, and it adds a long day at each end — Chennai to Madurai is around 460 km. For a group starting in Chennai we would suggest either flying to Madurai or adding two days and treating the transfers as part of the trip.
How much walking is involved?
A fair amount at Rameswaram, where the temple corridors are long and the ground hot underfoot. Kanyakumari is moderate. Courtallam involves steps down to the falls. Tell us if anyone has difficulty walking and we will plan the drop points.
Can we add Thekkady or Munnar?
Yes, and Courtallam is already halfway towards the ghat crossing. Adding Thekkady turns this into a seven-day circuit and needs a Kerala interstate permit. Ask us and we will lay out the extended version.
What is included?
The vehicle and chauffeur for five days, fuel, and driver batta each day, with tolls and parking at actuals. Accommodation, meals, entry fees and the Kanyakumari ferry are not included.
