Why an Urbania for this route
The case for starting a Wayanad trip from Mysuru is the clearest in our catalogue: 140 km against 280, and the part Mysuru skips is pure highway rather than the slow forest and plateau section. This is not the Ooty situation where halving the distance barely dents the time. Here it genuinely does, and a group leaving Mysuru at seven is on the plateau with the afternoon intact.
That margin is worth more than the hours themselves, because it is margin against the forest gate. Both Bandipur and Muthanga shut to through traffic overnight, and a Bengaluru group that loses ninety minutes to city traffic is suddenly doing arithmetic about whether they will make it. From Mysuru that anxiety does not arise. You can leave at a civilised hour, stop properly at Gundlupet, and still cross with room to spare.
It also makes Wayanad viable as a shorter trip. Three nights from Mysuru gives you three full days on the plateau; three nights from Bengaluru gives you barely two. For a group deciding between Wayanad and somewhere closer, the honest answer changes entirely depending on which city they start from — and if they can position to Mysuru the evening before, it is usually worth doing.

Road notes
Half the distance of the Bengaluru approach and roughly half the time, because the slow forest and plateau section is common to both and Mysuru skips the long highway run. The gate timings apply identically.
Season
October to March is the easier season. The monsoon is dramatic and difficult, with wet plateau roads, leeches on the walks, and Chembra and the falls sometimes closed.
Getting around at Wayanad
Keep the vehicle. Edakkal, Chembra, Banasura Sagar and Soochipara sit at genuinely awkward distances from one another on plateau roads, and no group of twelve is moving between them on local transport.
The short approach from Mysuru changes what fits. A Bengaluru group arrives tired on day one and effectively loses it; from Mysuru the arrival afternoon is usable, which is often enough for Edakkal or the Banasura dam before dinner. Plan for that rather than writing off the first day, and tell us what you want to fit in so the departure is timed for it.

How long is the drive from Mysore to Wayanad?
Around 140 km and three and a half to four hours. Unlike the Ooty comparison, starting from Mysuru genuinely does roughly halve the journey, because it skips a long highway stretch rather than a slow one.
What time do we need to leave?
Before seven, and earlier if you want margin on the forest gate. Both Bandipur and Muthanga close to through traffic overnight, so the departure is set by the gate rather than the distance.
Is the permit different coming from Mysore?
No — it is the same Kerala interstate commercial permit whichever side you approach from, obtained before dispatch and charged at actuals. What differs is only how much of the journey precedes it. From Mysuru the border comes up quickly, which occasionally surprises groups who expect a long run first.
What happens if we leave Mysore late?
You lose the day rather than arrive late. If you reach Gundlupet after the reserve gate has shut you are waiting until morning, and there is nothing at that end of the road to wait comfortably in. From Mysuru a mid-morning departure is still fine, which is exactly the margin a Bengaluru start does not give you.
What can we fit into the arrival day?
More than from Bengaluru. Leaving Mysuru at seven puts you on the plateau by late morning, so Edakkal or the Banasura dam are realistic before dinner rather than pushed to day two. Tell us what you want to do and we will time the departure for it.

Three nights is right from Mysuru, given the short drive. Two is possible and would mean choosing between Chembra, Edakkal and the falls rather than doing all three.
Can we combine it with Bandipur or Nagarahole?
Both sit on or near the route, which makes a Mysuru circuit taking in a reserve and the plateau one of the better four- or five-night trips available. The gate timings govern the whole thing rather than the distances.
Can we stop at Bandipur on the way?
You pass directly through it, so a stop is natural rather than a detour — but a safari there needs a booked slot and adds hours, which changes your gate margin considerably. Coming from Mysuru you have room for that in a way a Bengaluru group does not. Book the slot first and tell us.
Where do we stop on the way?
Gundlupet, which is the last town before the reserve and the place to refuel. There is nothing inside the forest and stopping within it is not permitted.
