The palace quarter at Thanjavur, Maratha-built and layered over earlier Nayak work. It holds the Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of the oldest working libraries in Asia, which almost every group visiting the great temple walks past without noticing.

Why an Urbania for this route
Thanjavur is the anchor of the Cauvery delta and a straightforward three and a half hour run north from Madurai. The Brihadeeswarar temple is the reason to come — a thousand years old, built by Rajaraja Chola, and among the finest things standing anywhere in India. It deserves a morning rather than an hour.
The route passes directly through Trichy, and Srirangam there is the largest functioning temple complex in the world. That makes it a stop rather than a detour, and it is why we suggest leaving early: fitting Srirangam and Thanjavur into one day is possible with a half past six start and impossible with a nine o'clock one, because of the midday closing that both observe.
Most groups treat this as one leg of a delta circuit rather than a there-and-back trip, and that is the right instinct. Kumbakonam, Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram are all within an hour of Thanjavur, and the delta rewards two or three days far more than it rewards a single long one.
Which Urbania should you choose?
The 13 seater. The highway suits any of the three, but Thanjavur's older streets are narrow and congested and Trichy's temple approaches are worse. On a day with two or three temple stops the shorter vehicle gets closer at each.
Luggage is rarely the constraint unless this is part of a longer circuit. If you are continuing into the delta or on to Chennai, size for the whole trip.

November to February is comfortable. The delta is flat, open and genuinely hot from March to June, and the temple courtyards are stone underfoot walked barefoot.
Getting around at Thanjavur
The temple and the palace quarter are close together and walkable from parking, which makes Thanjavur itself an easy town to see. The Saraswathi Mahal Library inside the palace complex is one of the oldest working libraries in Asia and almost every group walks past it.
Keep the vehicle if the delta is on your list. Darasuram, Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram are each a drive apart and there is no practical way to move a group between them otherwise. If Thanjavur alone is the plan, the vehicle is mostly waiting.

What is the best time of year?

Can we continue to Chennai from here?
Yes, and it is a natural onward leg of around 350 km. Many groups run Madurai to Thanjavur to Kumbakonam to Chennai as a delta circuit rather than returning the way they came. Ask us and we will lay it out.
Is Darasuram worth adding?
For anyone interested in the architecture, it is the finest of the three great Chola temples in detail even though Thanjavur is the largest. It is a short drive from Kumbakonam and adds half a day rather than a day.
