Pilgrimage itineraries are dictated by temple timings rather than by road distance, and a plan built from driving times alone tends to collapse at the second stop. Most temples close for several hours in the middle of the day, and arriving at one o'clock for a shrine that shut at half past twelve is a wasted morning of driving. Tirupati is the most common run from Bengaluru — a manageable drive north, then the ghat road up to Tirumala and whatever darshan arrangement you have made. Groups with a pre-booked slot need margin at the top rather than a tight arrival; groups relying on the general queue should plan for a substantially longer day than they expect and, honestly, for an overnight. Either way this is an early start, and an itinerary that has you leaving Bengaluru after sunrise is one we will push back on.

The Karnataka coastal circuit — Dharmasthala, Sringeri, Horanadu and Kukke Subrahmanya — is the other major pattern, and it is genuinely a three-day itinerary rather than a long weekend. The temples are separated by Western Ghats roads through Shiradi or Charmadi, which are slow, frequently wet, and occasionally subject to closure and diversion during the monsoon. We check the ghat status before dispatch and will reroute rather than commit a group to a road that is being repaired. Shirdi, further north, is a two-day drive each way and is best planned with a night at Hubballi or Kolhapur rather than driven in one push.

Practically, temple towns are unkind to long vehicles. The streets around a working temple are narrow, crowded, and effectively one-way regardless of the signage. Our chauffeurs drop at the nearest workable point and hold somewhere legal, which sometimes means a walk of a few hundred metres. If anyone in the group has difficulty walking, tell us when you book — it changes which entrances we can reach and occasionally changes which seater we send.

Vehicle choice deserves a thought on these routes. The ghat roads to Sringeri and Kukke Subrahmanya are narrower than the Tirupati approach, and a seventeen seater on them is slower and less comfortable than a thirteen. If your group is close to the boundary between the two, the smaller vehicle is often the better trip even where the larger one would technically seat everyone. We will recommend it, and it costs less.
