Madurai is well placed for outstation travel in a way the maps make obvious and the timings do not. Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Kodaikanal, Thekkady and Munnar are all a comfortable day's reach, which makes it the natural base for the southern circuit. The catch is that several of those are long days rather than short hops, and a plan that treats them as interchangeable will produce one very pleasant trip and one exhausting one.

Rameswaram is the run people underestimate. The distance is manageable but the day is long, particularly if the itinerary includes Dhanushkodi at the tip, where the final stretch is exposed and the light goes quickly. Attempting Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi and being back in Madurai the same evening is possible and not enjoyable. We will recommend a night there and say why, even though it makes the quote larger.

Westward, Thekkady and Munnar mean crossing into Kerala, which requires an interstate commercial permit obtained before dispatch and charged at actuals with the receipt. The climb through the Western Ghats on that side is sustained and, in the monsoon, genuinely wet. We check conditions before dispatch during those months and would rather reroute than commit a group to a ghat road that is being repaired.

The daily minimum of 300 kilometres applies as it does everywhere, and from Madurai it is usually comfortably exceeded rather than a sore point, because the destinations are far enough apart. Driver batta is a separate thousand rupees per day with the same again as late-night batta between ten at night and six in the morning. On the southern temple circuit, where days start early to reach a shrine before it closes at midday, that late-night allowance is often in play at the start of the day rather than the end, and we would rather it appeared in the quote than as a surprise afterwards.

Kodaikanal is the trip worth planning most carefully. The ascent from Batlagundu is a long sequence of hairpins, and while a long-wheelbase Urbania handles it comfortably with a chauffeur who has driven it before, it is slow. Groups routinely budget the distance and not the climb, and then find they have arrived after dark with nothing open.
