Mysuru is the best-placed of our hubs for a short group holiday, simply because the destinations are close. Coorg, Bandipur, Nagarahole, Wayanad and Ooty are all reachable in half a day or less, which means a two-night trip involves two short drives and a great deal of time actually being somewhere. That difference is the reason to travel as one group rather than in a convoy of cars: nobody spends their weekend driving.

The wildlife destinations bring a timing constraint that ordinary hill trips do not. Safaris run early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, and the reserves have entry hours that are not negotiable. Combined with the night traffic restriction on the roads through the forest, this means a trip to Bandipur or Nagarahole has a hard shape to it — you arrive before the gate closes, you are up before dawn, and you leave in daylight. For mixed groups with children or older relatives, seat position matters on the climbs west and south. The road up to Madikeri and the ascent towards Ooty are sustained hairpin sequences, and the rearmost row of a long Urbania is where travel sickness announces itself. Claim seats accordingly, and tell us in advance if it is a concern — occasionally it is a reason to take the thirteen seater rather than the seventeen even where the larger vehicle would seat everyone.

Luggage is the usual quiet limitation. A family group heading to Coorg for three days generates noticeably more than a bag each once someone packs a cooler, a pram or a set of walking boots, and a full thirteen seater with twelve suitcases is at its limit rather than comfortably loaded. Give us the bag count alongside the passenger count and we will tell you honestly whether the next seater is worth the modest extra cost. It usually is.

One last thing about stops. You cannot pull a long vehicle onto a narrow verge on a ghat road, so comfort halts happen at places that can actually take it, and on the forest stretches the options thin out considerably — stopping inside a reserve is not permitted in any case. We identify the halts before setting off rather than improvising when somebody asks, which is worth knowing if you are travelling with small children who will need more of them than the schedule assumes.
